Call for Topics: Discussion Sessions at OR50
Stewart Robinson and Estelle Shale, Warwick Business School
Is there a burning issue that you think the OR community needs to discuss? Perhaps you feel that OR should be more involved in the climate change debate or do much more to help solve the problem of rising crime? Do you have a particular vision for the future of some area of OR?
The discussion sessions at OR50 aim to provide an opportunity for the OR community to discuss and debate just these sorts of issues and ideas. So if there is something that you feel is particularly important or of interest, then why not offer to run a discussion session?
What is involved? A discussion session lasts for between 1 and 1.5 hours. It generally works best if there is a well defined topic and set of questions to discuss. We recommend getting one or more people to give brief presentations of their views on the topic, possibly by answering a series of focused questions. This can then act as a starting point for the discussion. These speakers do not need to be experts, but they need to have an opinion! Not more than 30 minutes should be given to presentations so as to allow plenty of time for debate.
As chair of a session you would be expected to define the topic and the questions to be discussed, find one or more speakers and to chair the discussion that follows. A note-taker will record the discussion for a write-up in “Inside OR”.
